OTEP Singer Denounces California Supreme Court's Decision To Uphold Proposition 8
May 28, 2009Otep Shamaya, lead singer for the band OTEP as well as a vegetarian, activist, and open lesbian, has commented on the California Supreme Court's decision to uphold Proposition 8, the same-sex marriage ban that voters approved last year. She writes on OTEP's MySpace page, "Our system of law is designed to protect the minority from discrimination by the majority. If this ruling stands unchallenged, what's next? Will some states repeal a woman's right to vote? Will some states (again) forbid interracial marriage? Will some states deny housing, or jobs based on religious preference?
"If they can legislate against what they call a 'sexual preference,' what is to stop them from legislating against religious preference? People choose their religion. We choose to believe or not to believe in God. So what is to stop the majority in any state from discriminating against those who do not share the majority religious preference?
"This is THE civil rights battle of our generation. We must not back down."
